Phones

I have been looking for a new phone. But honestly it is so hard. It has only been around 10 years since mobile phones became popular and readily available. And we have become so dependant on them. I personally only want a simple one that calls and receive calls. I do however want an extra. I want a camera too. Saves carrying 2 objects. Means I can take photos whenever something catches my eye, which incidentally is pretty often! But these 2 requirements are pretty basic. You can get an iphone, a blackberry or god knows what. But do you know what, you cannot just get a simple phone!

So…. my dilemma…. what do I get?

Accoona

Accoona Corp is an online company working in 3 major areas – Europe, the United States of America and China.

They try to offer competitive pricing and products. They also help you try to make informed decisions. Do do other stuff as well such as e commerce.

They have been around since 2004 and their President and CEO is of Maltese origin – Val Zammit. Always said Maltese do it well! Lol!

I am not quite sure how armand rousso comes into it. But I know that he does. If you know how, do let me know because I sure am really curious!

University

I am trying to keep an eye out for a good university for my younger brother. He wants to study dentistry but it is a pretty tough course to get into. Apparently the competition is really high. For example in Malta, they have a numerous clausus of 6. Can you just imagine the competition, especially bearing in mind there is only one university. So, I have been keeping my eyes open for different universities such as http://www.gibbsva.edu/? which may give him better odds to get accepted into his course of choice.

Meanwhile, I will just keep my fingers crossed that he gets into his course.

Debt

Some of today’s major financial problems is a result of too many people having adverse credit loans or in simple terminology – owe money. The amount of people who owe money is ridiculous. Many of them owe more than they can ever hope to pay also.

For some people there are solutions such as IVA – Individual Voluntary Arrangements or Debt Consolidation or Management.

I personally believe in one simple rule. Don’t buy anything unless you can afford to pay for it (ideally there and then). The only exception to this rule is borrowing money to buy your own house, which you pay over 25 years.

Locks of Love

Navtej Kohli has given me the opportunity to write about my current favourite charity -? Locks of Love. This is perhaps a rather unusual charity in the sense that they do not just ask or need money, but they appreciate your donated hair.? You see, what they do is they create wigs for children who suffer from hair loss as a result of a medical illness such as Cancer. I am sure that you can appreciate how hard it is to be a child in today’s world, let alone when they are suffering from an illness and losing their hair in the process.

To make matters worse, unlike with Adults, where you might be able to get a wig of sorts off the peg, you cannot get a child size wig. And for a wig to feel natural and look natural they need to be made specifically for the child. Locks of Love do exactly that.

And do you know what is best about this charity, that over 90% goes directly to the children unlike other charities where more than 50% can go to administration costs.

So it does not matter if you cannot afford to donate money to them, your hair could be just as important.? Just visit Locks of Love for further details.

Thoof!

I? have just heard about Thoof. In fact they are actually sponsoring this post.? Aren’t they sweet? Ok? I hear you ask what is Thoof? Well it is a website that offers? articles, photos, videos, web links and you even get your own? personalized news!

I must say, I think I like Thoof. There were articles that really made me laugh. Yes me! For example there is a link of some one who thought it would be cool to experiment and find out what happens if you drink a bottle of food colouring. Needless to say he threw it up, had stained blue teeth, lips, tongue and mouth. His end results were also just as colourful! Not an experiment I would try… yet he is contemplating trying with an alternative colour. Hmm!

So what got me thinking is what is Thoof? I mean the word Thoof. How did they come up with it. The simplest explanation is that it is a blend of words – Through the roof or abrieviated – Thoof. Alternatively it could be an acronym? for

  • T – The
  • H – House
  • O – Of
  • O – Our
  • F – Favourites

or my personal favourite – Thoof – the sound of me falling off my chair laughing!

What do you think Thoof means? And what about the Thoofrank badge?

Postcodes

Malta relatively recently (around 10 years ago) introduced Postcodes. They gave each postcode 3 letters and 2 numbers eg ABC12. The first 3 letters signified the town eg SGN = San Gwann and STJ = St Julian’s. There were a few semi odd ones too like ZBR for Marsascala (It is near Zabbar!). The numbers should have been a grid of sorts.

However this did not seem to work for them. They have changed the postcode system already. They now consist of 3 letters and 4 numbers eg ABC1234! The letters have mostly remained the same but some have changed eg Marsascala has become MSK.

When you consider how tiny Malta is you wonder why they need such a large system to get the postcode sorted. Even the USA (who incidentally have a city called Malta) have only a 5 digit postcoode eg Beverley Hills is 90210. The UK postcode is split into two letters upto 3 numbers and 2 letters – AB12 3CD. The first 2 letters splits the country eg TW = Thames West and the rest is a grid system.

So, Malta needs a more complex system than the US and the Uk combined despite it being smaller than some cities in the UK and US!

Chat Rooms

Forums are one of the latest things to hit the internet, and they are taking off in a big way. They are very basically a site for people to discuss and mention issues, pretty much like? chat rooms.

Let me start by saying that I actually like forums. The biggest drawback to them is the amount of time you can spend on them. The more people that are members to the forum, the better it usually is. There are all sorts of forums and obviously, it makes sense to find one which suits your needs, likes, hobbies etc.

Forums are most often dived into subsections. This means that you are more likely to find some discussion that appeals to you. Generally you need to be signed up to add your own comments. However, most are free for everyone to read. Some will only let you into part of the forum area.

Obviously I am signed up to the PPP Forums and quite enjoy that. It does keep me up to date with what is happening at PPP. But I am also signed up to some other forums, which are aligned to my interests. But as I explained, most forums have subsections which means they do have a whole range of topics and one or more of them is bound to interest you.

I always find it really interesting to read forums. You would be amazed at what you come across.

Most places have an off topic section. Now generally, I find this to be the best area. The most information and the most juicy titbits are usually found here. You do find some junk, but thankfully if you are on a good forum, there are good moderators that stop spamming and other non regulatory bits and pieces. Obviously each forum has its own rules. But most rules are common sense.

So basically my two cents is that I like forums!

Face Book

Everyone seems obsessed with Face Book. Personally I see it as a web that entraps people. I must say that I have not actually checked it out. But it bothers me that Face Book people have my details which was handed to them by friends and family on a silver platter. I think the internet can be a pretty scary place sometimes.

What do you think of Face Book?

Romance

Ah sweet memories of Thailand. I spent my honeymoon in Thailand. It was so nice to get flowers from a thai florist. My sweet hubby arranged an order of flowers from a Thailand florist? to be delivered to our hotelroom. I know it sounds cliche but it was so romantic. Thankfully he has not lost any of his romance.

I must say that sending flowers to Thailand from a Bangkok florist was not expensive either. So it was a huge gesture without much expense. They do make my day. :)
